SUNNAH NABI DAN METODE MEMAHAMINYA MENURUT YUSUF AL-QARDHAWI

Abstract

Yusuf al-Qardhawi is a Muslim intellectual figure who was born in a small village called Saft Turab in
Egypt in 1926. He is an intellectual figure as well as a contemporary scholar who is quite respected in the
world of Islamic science. Thanks to the knowledge he has, he becomes a figure who is able to describe and
study sunnah as a science and civilization. One of al-Qardhawi's contributions which discusses the
contextualization of sunnah, is al-Sunnah Mashdaran li al-Ma'rifah wa al-Hadharah. This book discusses
three main themes, namely (a) the tasyri aspect of the sunnah; (b) sunnah as a source of knowledge and (c)
sunnah as a source of civilization. This work is compiled using the thematic method using ma'sur and ra'yu
sources. Meanwhile, regarding the method used by al-Qardhawi in discussing a hadith, according to the author,
he always pays attention to the internal and external sides of the hadith. The internal aspect of hadith is
about isnad. While the external side of the hadith is the understanding of the hadith itself or the ma'anil
hadith. Al-Qaradawi sets out eight principles in understanding hadith: (a) understanding hadith according
to the instructions of the Qur'an; (b) collect thematic hadiths; (c) review contradictory hadiths; (d) understand
the hadith in accordance with the background, situation and condition and its purpose; (e) distinguish between
variable means and fixed ends; (f) differentiate between haqiqi and majazi expressions; (g) distinguishing
between the unseen and the real and (h) ascertaining connotative meanings in the hadith.
